The Challenge
Uplift Youth Collective had been running after-school programs and mentorship services for at-risk youth in Baltimore for six years. Despite strong community impact — serving over 400 young people annually — the organization was struggling financially. Grant applications were written ad hoc with no tracking system, and Terrence was losing out on funding opportunities because he couldn't produce the outcome data that funders required.
Staff retention was a crisis. With only 11 employees, losing even one program coordinator disrupted services for dozens of kids. Terrence couldn't afford competitive salaries, and offering health benefits seemed impossible on a nonprofit budget. Three key staff members had left in the past year citing lack of benefits, and recruiting replacements was taking months. The administrative burden of running the organization was consuming Terrence's time, leaving little room for the strategic work needed to grow the mission.
Our Solution
SBEC took a holistic approach, addressing both operational efficiency and staff welfare. We started with business coaching sessions focused on nonprofit sustainability — helping Terrence build a diversified funding strategy, create a grant calendar, and develop outcome tracking systems that would satisfy funder reporting requirements. An AI-powered grant writing assistant was configured with Uplift's mission, programs, and impact data to streamline application drafts.
Critically, SBEC helped Uplift navigate health benefits options for small nonprofits, enrolling the team in a group health plan through a nonprofit benefits consortium that kept premiums affordable. We also implemented a volunteer management platform, automated donor acknowledgment emails, and built a simple CRM to track relationships with individual donors and institutional funders. The result was an organization that could focus on its mission instead of drowning in administration.

Client Testimonial
“We're in this to change kids' lives, not to fight with spreadsheets and grant paperwork. SBEC gave us the tools and coaching to run like a real organization. Offering health benefits changed our retention overnight — people stay because they feel valued. We doubled our grant funding and we're serving 60% more young people. That's what matters.”
